The Woman Who Labored Sixteen Hours Alone Whose Mother’s First Message Was A Demand For Money

There was no question about how I was doing. No congratulations, no concern about my newborn daughter, and no acknowledgment that I had just endured sixteen hours of labor without my husband. My mother’s message contained only one request: “Your sister’s children need new phones. Send $2,500. Marisol’s embarrassed theirs are so old.” I read it repeatedly while Aurelia slept against my chest. I had spent years being labeled the strong, independent daughter who never needed anything. Now, hours after giving birth, my mother still saw me as the person who could always provide.

 

 

 

I did not respond. For once, I had nothing left to give and no guilt left to surrender. I placed the phone aside, looked at my daughter, and promised her she would never be treated as the child who could be overlooked simply because she seemed capable. I slept, and for several days there was silence. Then, a week after Aurelia’s birth, someone began pounding on my front door. My mother entered without waiting to be invited, furious that I had ignored her request. She demanded to know how I could abandon my own family over such a small amount of money. I let her speak until she finished, then asked one question she clearly had never expected to hear.
