Hazel pressed play, and Grandma’s own voice filled the silent backyard. “That boy isn’t really one of us. Your mother adopted him, and blood is blood. I don’t want him at my table taking what belongs to my real grandchildren.” The words stopped everything. Forks froze, conversations disappeared, and even my brother turned away from the grill.
