“You’re billing your own brother?” Ryan shouted, loud enough that two wedding guests turned their heads. I did not raise my voice. I simply pointed toward the papers on the table and reminded him that Grandma’s farm was no longer a forgotten family property. After her death, I had spent years repairing the barns, restoring the guesthouse, installing security cameras, and turning the land into a profitable business. The estate manager, Diane, stood beside me with her clipboard and calmly asked Ryan to sign the documents acknowledging the damage he had caused during the wedding weekend. He refused and demanded to speak to “Grandma’s real family,” as though I were an employee.
