After spending weeks planning her father’s sixty-second birthday dinner, Kristen never expected the evening to end with her seven-year-old twins being humiliated in front of their entire family. Her sister Renee called Nolan and Piper irritating, while their grandfather watched and then asked Kristen to leave rather than defend his grandchildren. Kristen said nothing. She simply took her children to Chuck E. Cheese, where they quickly forgot the cruel comments beneath the bright arcade lights. But while they laughed and collected tickets, panic began spreading back at the restaurant. The dinner bill had reached $1,900, and Kristen had quietly frozen the credit card connected to the reservation.
Furious messages began arriving almost immediately. Renee demanded that Kristen fix the account, while her father pleaded with her to solve the problem and prevent further embarrassment. Kristen looked at her children laughing together and realized she was finished rescuing everyone else from consequences they had created themselves. She typed one final message—“Looks like you will need another plan”—then turned off her phone. She had no idea how many messages would be waiting when she finally turned it back on the next morning.
