The Bearded Biker My Son Ran To Held A Secret From My Past 2

Children, it turned out, sense things adults spend years denying. Malachi couldn’t have known the truth, but he had gravitated to Roy from the first day, drawn to a warmth neither of them could explain. When Roy finally told him, gently, a week earlier, that he thought he might be Malachi’s grandfather, my son had believed him completely and kept it as the biggest secret of his small life, which explained the way he ran, and the way his face fell when he saw me, afraid he’d let the secret slip too soon.

I didn’t know what to feel that afternoon, standing between the father I’d been told to forget and the son who had found him first. I was angry, and grieving, and overwhelmed, and none of it was simple. But I looked at the photograph again, at my mother’s tired smile, and at the man who had spent thirty years trying to find his way back, and I decided not to slam a door my son had already opened. We started slowly. Coffee, then a lunch, then a Sunday when Roy taught Malachi the names of every part of his motorcycle in the driveway. He never pushed. He understood he was being given something he hadn’t earned, and he treated it that way. My mother’s version of the story had protected me once. But standing outside that school, watching my son hug the grandfather he’d somehow known before I did, I understood there was room, finally, for a different ending.
