Mabel had spent forty years teaching children, raising her son alone after her husband died, and flying Crest View Airlines whenever she visited family. At seventy, she had learned to travel quietly, carrying a paperback and a small gold airplane brooch on her collar.
But on this flight to Chicago, quiet did not protect her. After boarding, she was stopped by senior crew member Priscilla Hargrove, who insisted that Mabel’s assigned seat was unavailable because of a supposed system error. Mabel calmly showed her ticket, but Priscilla dismissed her and told her to move farther back. Passengers watched while Gordon Pruitt in 2C impatiently told her to hurry.
