The Envelope My Dying Father Left Me Held A Secret About My Wife

I drove toward Mountain Crest Hospital with the stranger’s unfinished warning repeating in my head. Near the surgical floor, Anjali Rao was waiting with a slim folder and a sealed envelope from my father, Harold. She told me he was still in surgery before placing the envelope in my hands. Six shaky words were written across the front: “Do not let your wife see this.” My hands trembled as I opened it.

 

 

Inside were adoption papers, photographs, and a private investigator’s report. None of the documents were about me. They were about Melissa, my wife. My father had recognized her years earlier but had waited for proof before telling me. Anjali explained that the investigation had uncovered a connection between Melissa and a man involved in predatory housing schemes. Then she showed me photographs of Melissa meeting secretly with both a real estate attorney and the man identified as her biological father. My stomach tightened as I realized my father had been trying to warn me about something far more dangerous than I had imagined.
