The Answer I Gave My Daughter at the Farmers Market Ended Years of Being Her Doormat

I had spent years maintaining the farmhouse outside Nashville, even though my daughter, Melissa, acted as if it belonged to her. After her father died, I paid the taxes, repaired the roof, cleaned the rooms, and handled every expense. Melissa visited when she needed something, usually bringing friends, complaints, and another request. When she announced her wedding plans, she immediately decided the farmhouse would be the perfect venue. I reminded her that I had sold it months earlier, but she barely listened. She assumed I would somehow fix the problem.

 

 

A week before the wedding, Melissa called in a panic. The new owner, Gerald, had discovered that she was planning to use his property and had refused to let her hold the event there. Melissa demanded that I convince him, while Bethany, her wedding planner, insisted everything had already been arranged. I calmly told them both that the farmhouse was no longer my responsibility. Then my phone began ringing again and again, and this time, something in Melissa’s voice made me realize the situation was about to become much worse.
