Morning sunlight spread across San Diego Harbor as my father walked onto the deck wearing my robe, followed by my mother and Damon. They behaved as though the previous night had changed nothing. My father asked whether I had finally wired the money they demanded. I calmly told him I had not sent a cent. Instead, I had made a purchase of my own.
