The Empty Chair Where I Should Have Sat Told My Son Everything He Needed to Know

My hands shook as I gripped the phone. “Canceled.” My sister’s voice was buried beneath the noise of a confused crowd, crying guests, and hurried footsteps. Then she explained what had happened. Nathaniel had arrived at his wedding, looked toward the front row where his mother should have been sitting, and found an empty chair. Kendra, his fiancée, told everyone I was too unwell to attend. But Nathaniel knew me better than that. He knew I would never miss his wedding because of something as minor as a headache. Something about the story immediately felt wrong.

He left the venue and called my sister, asking what Kendra had actually said to me the night before. My sister, who had held me while I cried, finally told him everything. She repeated Kendra’s cruel words and explained why I had stayed home instead of attending my own son’s wedding. Nathaniel became completely silent. Then he walked back inside, still wearing his wedding suit, and approached Kendra in front of their guests. He asked her to repeat exactly what she had told his mother at the rehearsal dinner. Kendra laughed nervously and called it a misunderstanding, but Nathaniel already knew the truth. Then he asked her again…
