I Went Looking for Candles During a Blackout and Made an Unexpected Discovery2

I stared at him, completely unconvinced. That bizarre collection of spikes and unusual shapes was apparently nothing mysterious at all. It was a custom gaming accessory designed to hold his video game controller when he wasn’t using it. My son explained that he had downloaded the design online and had it 3D-printed using a friend’s printer. The strange futuristic appearance was intentional, and the pointed sections were simply part of the artistic design. He had used it for a while before eventually pushing it beneath his bed and forgetting about it.

Suddenly, every detail made sense. The lightweight plastic, the unusual construction, the lack of packaging, and the absence of any recognizable markings were exactly what I should have expected from a homemade 3D-printed accessory. Yet only minutes earlier, my mind had transformed the harmless object into something far more mysterious. I couldn’t help laughing at myself, and my son laughed even harder. Nothing about the object had changed. Only my understanding of it had changed.

The next morning, I looked at the controller stand again in proper daylight. Without the darkness and strange shadows, it looked completely different. The design was actually quite impressive, with detailed shapes that gave it a futuristic appearance. I finally understood why my son had liked it. Over breakfast, we laughed again about how seriously I had examined what was essentially a piece of gaming equipment. What had begun as a late-night mystery had already become a funny family story.

The experience reminded me how easily our imagination can fill gaps when we don’t have enough information. A shadow can look like a person, a strange noise can seem frightening, and an unfamiliar object can appear much more mysterious than it really is. The object under my son’s bed was never dangerous or unusual in any meaningful way. It was simply a forgotten controller stand. In the end, the real lesson wasn’t about gaming or 3D printing—it was about perspective. Sometimes, the thing that seems mysterious in the darkness becomes completely ordinary once you finally turn on the light.
