Why Do We Call Them T-shirts?

The T-shirt is one of the most recognizable pieces of clothing in the world, yet its name comes from something remarkably simple. When the garment is laid flat, its body forms a vertical shape while the sleeves extend sideways, creating an outline resembling the capital letter “T.” That straightforward shape eventually gave the shirt the name people still use today. However, the garment was not originally designed as fashionable everyday clothing. In the early 1900s, lightweight cotton crew-neck shirts were mainly worn as undershirts, particularly by sailors in the United States Navy. They were valued because they were comfortable, breathable, and easy to wash.

 

 

As time passed, workers and laborers began wearing the shirts by themselves, especially in warm conditions where heavy clothing was uncomfortable. The simple garment gradually escaped its role as underwear and started becoming part of everyday life. But the biggest transformation was still ahead. During the 1950s, Hollywood stars appeared wearing plain white T-shirts on screen, giving the once-basic garment a completely new image. Actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean helped turn it into a symbol of youth, confidence, and rebellion, and suddenly the humble shirt was no longer just…
