I had sold Hazel the house that April for one dollar and a promise, just as the lawyer had written my lease for a dollar a year. Money was never the point. I wanted my home in the hands of the one person who had always loved me, while protecting it from Roland and Sheila, who had spent two years treating it as theirs. Every signature, stamp, and county record was real. Hazel owned the walls, roof, sewing room, and kitchen table where Roland had once pushed his papers toward me. I retained the legal right to live there for the rest of my life.
When Roland heard the news, he laughed and called me confused. Sheila threatened judges and locked rooms, insisting Hazel had manipulated a vulnerable old woman. Hazel calmly opened her blue folder. Inside were the lawyer’s competency letter, the recorded deed, and a warning that selling property they did not own could be fraud.
