The grocery store was quiet that afternoon, filled with the ordinary sounds of shopping carts and distant announcements. While waiting in line, I noticed a young girl holding a small birthday cake. Her hands trembled as she counted the money in her palm. When the cashier told her she was short, her face fell. She quietly stepped aside, ready to leave without the cake. Before I could think, I stepped forward and paid the difference. The girl stared at me, then hugged me gently. “Thank you,” she whispered. “It’s for my mom. She’s sick, and today is her birthday.” Her words stayed with me as she hurried toward the exit, carefully protecting the cake.
I continued shopping, but everything suddenly felt different. Near the checkout, I noticed a small piece of paper tucked beneath my shopping bag. I picked it up and saw a childlike drawing of a cake with the words, “Thank you.” I smiled, assuming the girl had left it behind. Then I noticed something written underneath that made my smile disappear.
