Putting a top sheet “upside down” may actually be the correct way to make a bed, especially when the sheet has a decorative pattern. Instead of placing the attractive side facing upward, turn it toward your body. Then fold the upper section back over the blanket or comforter near the pillows. This reveals the patterned side and creates the polished decorative border often seen on professionally made hotel beds.

There is also a practical reason for arranging it this way. Depending on the material, the patterned side may feel smoother or softer against your skin. The top sheet also creates a washable layer between your body and heavier bedding, catching sweat, oils, lotions, and skin cells before they reach the comforter. However, the trick is mostly useful for sheets with different sides. With plain sheets that feel identical on both surfaces, the direction doesn’t really matter, and some people prefer not to use a top sheet at all.
