A criminal who has collected a few seconds of someone’s voice could potentially create a convincing imitation and use it during a phone call. That means even a voice you have trusted for years may no longer be enough to prove someone’s identity.
Scammers can exploit this technology in several ways. A criminal might pretend to be a relative experiencing an emergency, a coworker needing an urgent payment, or someone from a company requesting confirmation. They may deliberately create pressure so the victim has little time to think. Another tactic involves the so-called “yes” scam, where a caller asks a question designed to make the victim respond with an easy confirmation. The recording can then potentially be manipulated or reused as part of a fraudulent scheme. Even answering an unfamiliar call can tell scammers that a number is active and that someone is willing to respond.
The safest response is simple: slow down and verify. If an unknown caller asks you to confirm something, you don’t have to immediately say yes. If a supposed bank, company, or organization calls with an urgent request, contact the organization directly using its official contact information. Avoid relying on a phone number provided by the caller, because the entire situation may be designed to prevent you from checking independently.
Your voice should now be treated like another piece of personal information that deserves protection. You cannot completely prevent criminals from encountering recordings of you, but you can make their job much harder by refusing to rush into decisions and verifying unexpected requests. Never let familiarity with a voice replace actual identification.
