Early in the morning, I went outside to get some fresh air and found this. 2

The creature was a hammerhead worm, a type of terrestrial flatworm named for its unusually broad, hammer-shaped head. Unlike ordinary earthworms, these creatures are predators. They move across soil and hunt other small organisms, including earthworms, using their specialized bodies and feeding structures. Seeing one in a garden can therefore be a surprising experience, especially if you have never encountered one before. Its unusual appearance can make it seem much more dangerous than it actually is, but caution is still important.

One of the first recommendations is simple: don’t pick up a hammerhead worm with your bare hands. Some species produce irritating or potentially harmful substances, and terrestrial flatworms can also be associated with parasites or other organisms that you don’t want to accidentally transfer to yourself. Children and pets should also be kept away from unfamiliar wildlife. Even when a creature appears harmless, avoiding direct contact is the safest choice.

Another important warning is not to cut the worm apart. Some flatworms have remarkable regenerative abilities, meaning attempting to destroy one by cutting it can create an even bigger problem rather than solving it. If you need to remove one, use appropriate precautions and avoid direct skin contact. Depending on local guidance, simply leaving it undisturbed may be the safest option.

What began as an ordinary morning suddenly became a memorable encounter with one of nature’s strangest creatures. The long body, dark markings, and unmistakable hammer-shaped head had seemed almost fictional when I first saw it. Now I understood why it had looked so unusual. I hadn’t discovered an alien creature or a monster from beneath the soil—just a fascinating terrestrial predator that most people rarely notice. Still, as I walked back inside, I couldn’t help looking at the garden differently, wondering what other strange creatures might be moving quietly beneath my feet.
