Judge Diane Goodstein’s South Carolina Residence Damaged in Fire

A quiet October morning on Edisto Beach turned tragic when a fire erupted at the marshfront home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein. The blaze broke out on October 4, 2025, consuming the three-story residence and prompting a rapid response from firefighters and concerned neighbors.

At the time, Judge Goodstein was walking her dogs nearby, unaware that flames were spreading through her home. Inside were her husband, former state senator Arnold Goodstein, and several family members. As the fire intensified, Arnold was forced to leap from the house into the surrounding marshland to escape.

Neighbors quickly rushed to help. Using a canoe and ropes, they managed to pull Arnold from the marsh as emergency crews arrived at the scene. Their quick thinking and bravery likely saved lives that morning.

Three people were hospitalized as a result of the blaze. Arnold Goodstein sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment. Others were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Investigators from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire. As of early October, officials had not determined how it started and stated that all possibilities remain under review.

The Goodstein family’s home was left heavily damaged, with charred remains visible from the nearby marsh. Community members have since offered support and assistance to the family as they recover from the devastating loss.

The fire came just weeks after Judge Goodstein drew public attention for issuing a temporary restraining order blocking the release of voter registration data to the U.S. Department of Justice. Authorities have not linked the incident to her judicial work.

For now, investigators continue searching for answers as the community rallies behind the Goodstein family.
