They Flew His Mother To Fiji On My Money, So I Emptied The Account And Changed The Locks 2

Rosalind admitted that Bethany had told her the family had saved for the trip. I explained that they had saved nothing. They had collected money from me, received help from Elliot with their car payments, and apparently relied on several relatives while maintaining the story that they were constantly on the verge of financial disaster.

Still, Rosalind tried to argue that Bethany was my daughter and that cutting her off was too extreme. I corrected her. I had not abandoned Bethany; I had simply stopped financing a lie. There was a difference between refusing to support someone and refusing to be manipulated.

For the first time, Rosalind truly understood what had happened. She admitted she had never known about the supposed foreclosure being false or about the financial help coming from other family members. Bethany had told her the money was simply a gift. I told her it had been a gift—I just had not known who the real recipient would become.

Rosalind left without finishing her tea. Two days later, she called again. This time, she was not defending Bethany. She told me she had confronted Trevor herself and asked him how a couple supposedly facing bankruptcy had somehow managed to book three international plane tickets. He had no convincing answer. Rosalind apologized, and I believed her. She had been used to shame me without knowing that she was only another person being deceived.

Once my monthly payments stopped and Elliot stopped covering their car expenses, Bethany and Trevor were forced to confront their actual finances. They were not facing the immediate foreclosure they had described. They had simply spent beyond their means while depending on their parents to cover the difference.

Elliot and I compared messages, bank records, and every emergency request we could find. The pattern became impossible to deny. I decided not to involve the authorities because they were still family, but I permanently stopped sending money and stopped allowing surprise visits.

That week, I finished transforming my study. I painted the walls, placed my sewing machine beside the window, and created a quiet space that belonged entirely to me. I kept the bank statements in a drawer as a reminder of what I had learned. Bethany and I still speak occasionally, but our relationship is different now. It is careful and limited, yet honest.

On my seventy-first birthday, I did not wait for anyone to bring flowers or call. Instead, I gave myself something better: the freedom to stop being the account everyone expected to drain. For the first time in years, I fully understood that the house, the money, and the key to the door belonged to me—and that was the best birthday gift I could have given myself.
