The ocean can look calm, peaceful, and inviting, yet its surface can sometimes hide conditions that are far more dangerous than they appear. One unusual phenomenon that captures attention is known as square waves. From above, the water can form a strange grid-like pattern, with waves crossing one another to create what looks almost like a giant checkerboard.

Because the pattern is so unusual, people may stop to photograph it or watch the water without realizing what it can indicate. These formations occur when two different wave systems travel across each other at sharp angles. Instead of moving together in one direction, the waves intersect, creating walls of water that produce the distinctive square appearance. What looks beautiful from the shore can be a warning sign of something much more serious.
