What’s the Purpose of That Tiny Hole in a Safety Pin 2

One classic sewing shortcut is using a small piece of dry soap to mark fabric. Before fabric pens and tailor’s chalk became common, sewing enthusiasts often used soap because it creates a visible temporary line that can usually be removed with washing. It is inexpensive, simple, and useful when you need to mark measurements or sewing positions.

Another valuable technique is backstitching. When finishing a seam, sewing backward over the final few centimeters locks the stitches together and helps prevent the thread from unraveling. It is a small extra step, but it can significantly improve the durability of handmade clothing and other fabric projects.

The way you place pins can also make a difference. Rather than inserting them straight across the seam, try positioning them diagonally along the sewing line. This can hold layers more securely while making the pins easier to remove as you approach them with the needle. A simple thread-wrapping technique can also create a neat finishing knot by wrapping the thread around the needle several times before pulling it through.

Finally, beeswax can make hand sewing noticeably easier. Running thread lightly across a block of beeswax helps reduce tangling and fraying while giving the thread additional strength and stability. The result is smoother stitching and a cleaner finish.

These techniques may be old-fashioned, but their usefulness has not disappeared. From a tiny safety-pin hole to a piece of ordinary soap or beeswax, simple tools and clever methods can make sewing faster, neater, and far less frustrating.
