My grandmother’s attorney, Mr. Ellsworth, arrived without hurry, carrying two sealed envelopes and the confidence of a man who already knew how the day would end. I stepped out of my car, exhausted from days spent arranging a funeral, yet strangely calm. Whatever happened next had already been decided long before my grandmother drew her final breath.

Mr. Ellsworth opened the trust documents and quietly faced Marcus. “There was one final provision your wife never knew about,” he said. Marcus frowned. Then the attorney looked him in the eye and calmly announced the inheritance he had just destroyed through his own deception.
