A few minutes later, the server returned and quietly leaned toward me. “Sir, your card didn’t go through,” she whispered. Embarrassment rushed over me as I quickly tried another card, only to hear the same response. My date politely looked away, pretending not to notice while I apologized. We stepped outside to sort out the problem, but before we could leave, the server called my name.
