A Single Carpenter Fought to Keep Five Siblings Together — Then the Judge Learned His Secret 2

Taking a deep breath, I told the courtroom about my own childhood. When I was nine years old, I had stood in the very same courthouse with my four brothers and sisters after losing our parents. That day, a judge separated us into different foster homes across three counties. We promised we would find one another again, but two of my siblings disappeared from my life forever. The memory of that day had never left me, and I could not bear to watch another family experience the same heartbreak.

The courtroom grew completely still. Even the state’s attorney lowered his papers as I explained everything I had done to prepare. My mortgage was paid on time, my carpenter’s insurance could be expanded to include the children, and I had carefully planned my finances to provide for them without risking their future. Every bedroom had passed inspection, every required appointment had been scheduled, and every decision had been made with one goal in mind—keeping the siblings together.

The judge turned to Eli and gently asked what he wanted most. The six-year-old looked around the room before quietly answering, “I just want us to stay together.” His simple words carried more weight than any legal argument. After reviewing the inspection reports, financial plans, and supervision recommendations, the judge denied the request to separate the children and granted me temporary custody while the adoption process moved forward.

Before the paperwork was even complete, little Lila ran into my arms, followed by the twins, while Eli finally allowed himself to smile. The caseworker handed me the custody order and explained that regular visits would continue until everything became permanent. That afternoon, all five children climbed into my van together. As we drove home, Eli looked at me through the rearview mirror and quietly asked if this was really their new family. I smiled and told him yes. In that moment, I realized I couldn’t change what had happened to my own siblings years ago—but I had finally kept another family from being torn apart.
