If You Have These Lines on Your Nails, You Should Pay Attention 2

Vertical ridges are generally harmless and become more common with age as nail cells grow at a slightly slower and less even rate. In most cases, they do not indicate a medical problem. However, if the ridges suddenly become much more noticeable or are accompanied by changes in nail color, thickness, splitting, or brittleness, it may be worth discussing them with a healthcare professional.

Nail texture can also be affected by nutritional deficiencies. Low levels of iron, zinc, protein, or certain vitamins may influence how nails grow and appear. In addition, skin conditions such as eczema and other disorders affecting the nail matrix can alter the surface of the nails and create irregular ridges or other changes.

Horizontal grooves, known as Beau’s lines, are less common and can develop after a significant illness, high fever, major stress, or injury that temporarily interrupts nail growth. As the nail continues to grow, these lines gradually move toward the tip, providing a rough timeline of when the interruption occurred.

Not all nail changes come from internal health conditions. Everyday factors such as repeated injuries, frequent exposure to water or harsh chemicals, and cosmetic treatments like acrylic nails or gel polish can also affect nail appearance. Looking at nail changes in context is important. Stable, gradual ridges are usually nothing to worry about, while sudden or widespread changes—especially when combined with other symptoms—deserve professional evaluation to determine whether an underlying health issue needs attention.
