6 Things To Avoid Flushing Down The Toilet (And How to Keep Your Plumbing Happy) 2

Hair is one of the most common causes of clogged pipes because it does not dissolve in water. Instead, it tangles together and catches on rough spots inside plumbing, trapping other debris until a blockage forms. Baby wipes, makeup wipes, and even products labeled as “flushable” can also create problems because they are designed to stay strong when wet rather than break apart like toilet paper.

Other items that should never be flushed include paper towels, facial tissues, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, and dental floss. Paper towels and tissues are made to remain durable when wet, while feminine products absorb water and expand, making them more likely to become stuck in pipes. Cotton swabs and dental floss can snag inside plumbing and collect additional debris, eventually creating stubborn clogs.

If something inappropriate is accidentally flushed, acting quickly can help prevent an overflow. Turn off the toilet’s water supply if necessary, avoid flushing again, and try using a proper toilet plunger. If the clog does not clear, adding a small amount of dish soap followed by hot—but not boiling—water may help loosen the blockage. If the toilet remains clogged, it is best to contact a professional plumber rather than risk damaging the plumbing.

The simplest way to avoid toilet problems is to remember one basic rule: only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed. Keeping a small trash can in the bathroom makes it easy to dispose of other items safely. These simple habits can prevent expensive repairs, reduce the risk of plumbing emergencies, and help keep your home’s plumbing system working reliably for years to come.
