Baggage Handlers Explain Why Tying a Ribbon to Your Luggage Is a Big Mistake 2

Modern airports depend heavily on automated technology to move luggage quickly and accurately. Scanners read barcodes and identification labels, allowing bags to travel through complicated networks without constant human involvement. While ribbons, straps, and decorations may make a suitcase easier to identify at the destination, loose items can sometimes interfere with this process. A dangling ribbon may block a barcode, become caught in conveyor equipment, or prevent the bag from moving smoothly through the system.

When a scanner cannot properly read a luggage tag, the suitcase may be removed from the automated line and sent for manual processing. This extra step can delay delivery and increase the possibility that a bag arrives later than expected. Although a single ribbon rarely causes a major problem, baggage professionals point out that airports handle millions of pieces of luggage, meaning even small disruptions can create additional work throughout the system.

Another important habit travelers should follow is removing old airline stickers and outdated baggage labels before each trip. Many passengers leave previous tags attached to their suitcases, but these old markings can confuse automated scanners or baggage staff. A machine may detect multiple codes and struggle to determine which destination information is correct. Clearing away old labels helps ensure the bag follows the intended route without unnecessary complications.

Travelers should also be mindful of what they pack. Certain dense food products, such as marzipan or other compact items, may appear unusual on security scanners because of their composition. These items are generally allowed in many situations, but they can sometimes attract additional inspection, adding time to the screening process. Understanding how everyday belongings appear during security checks can help avoid surprises.

For protecting the suitcase itself, baggage handlers often recommend placing luggage wheels-up when handing it over for transport. This position can reduce the chance of wheels being damaged as bags are moved across belts and loading areas. Instead of relying on ribbons or loose decorations, experts suggest choosing luggage with a distinctive color, pattern, or built-in identifier from the start. A unique suitcase design makes recognition easier while keeping the baggage system efficient. Sometimes the best travel tricks are not the most noticeable ones—they are the ones that quietly prevent problems before they happen.
