The Best-Kept Secret to Creamy, Gourmet Mashed Potatoes (It’s NOT milk!) 2

For four servings, start with about 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes. Peel them if desired, cut them into evenly sized pieces, and boil them in salted water until they are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes thoroughly, then return them to the warm pot for a minute or two to allow excess moisture to evaporate. This step helps create a fluffier final texture.

Mash the potatoes by hand using a potato masher or potato ricer. Avoid using a blender or food processor, as overprocessing can release too much starch and leave the potatoes with a gummy consistency. Add 6 ounces (175 grams) of unsalted butter while the potatoes are still hot so it melts evenly throughout the mash.

Next, slowly pour in about ⅓ cup (100 milliliters) of hot heavy cream or whipping cream, stirring gently until the potatoes become smooth and creamy. Warming the cream before adding it helps maintain the potatoes’ temperature and allows the ingredients to blend together more evenly. Season with salt to taste and, if desired, freshly ground black pepper.

For extra flavor, consider mixing in roasted garlic, shredded cheddar or Parmesan cheese, fresh chives, parsley, thyme, or a small spoonful of sour cream. These additions can give the mashed potatoes a unique twist while keeping the rich, creamy texture intact. Taste before serving and adjust the seasoning as needed.

Whether served alongside a weeknight dinner or a holiday feast, creamy mashed potatoes are a versatile side dish that appeals to both children and adults. With quality ingredients and a few simple techniques, you can turn an everyday recipe into a comforting dish that feels special without making it complicated.
