She married an KOREAN man at 21 and left us… but every year she sends us the same message” 2

As the years slipped by, Theresa began to feel that the brief messages hid more than they revealed. They spoke on video only once, and although Mary Lou looked healthy, there was a sadness in her eyes that her mother could not ignore. Whenever Theresa asked why she never came home, the answer was always the same: she was too busy. The conversation ended quickly, leaving Theresa with more questions than comfort.

The money her daughter sent ensured Theresa never struggled financially, but it could not fill the silence in her home. Every Christmas, she cooked Mary Lou’s favorite dishes and placed an extra plate on the table, hoping that one year the empty chair would finally be occupied. Friends encouraged her to be grateful that her daughter was successful, yet a mother’s intuition kept telling her something was missing.

At sixty-three, Theresa decided she could no longer live with uncertainty. She had never traveled outside her country before, but she gathered her courage, bought a plane ticket to South Korea, and kept the trip a secret. She wanted to see her daughter with her own eyes instead of relying on short messages and distant promises that everything was fine.

When Theresa finally arrived at the address Mary Lou had provided years earlier, she discovered the truth was far different from what she had imagined. Her daughter had not forgotten her or chosen to stay away out of indifference. She had been carrying responsibilities and hardships she never wanted her mother to witness, believing distance would spare Theresa from worry. Their emotional reunion ended years of painful silence, reminding both women that love can survive even the longest separation—but it should never be left to depend on a single message saying, “I’m doing well.”
