Why Would Your Pooch Have White Poop?

Noticing white or very pale stool in your dog can be alarming, and while it is not always a sign of a serious illness, it should never be ignored. A healthy dog’s stool is typically brown because of bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver. When stool becomes chalky white, pale gray, or unusually light in color, it may indicate a change in diet, digestion, or an underlying health problem that deserves attention.

One of the most common causes is a diet containing too much bone. Dogs that eat raw bones, bone meal, or foods with high bone content may pass hard, chalky stools due to excess calcium. However, pale stool can also point to problems involving the liver, gallbladder, or pancreas, making it important to look beyond diet alone. Understanding the possible causes can help you decide when it’s time to contact your veterinarian.
