To conserve copper for military equipment, the U.S. Mint replaced the traditional bronze penny with a zinc-coated steel version in 1943. The transition was intended to be complete, ensuring that every new cent reflected the nation’s wartime priorities.

However, a small number of bronze coin blanks from 1942 were accidentally left inside the minting presses. When these leftover planchets were struck with 1943 dies, they produced bronze pennies that were never meant to exist. The mistake went unnoticed until years later, when a few unusual coins surfaced and sparked one of the greatest mysteries in coin collecting.
