Firefighters are issuing an important safety reminder about how power strips should be used

Firefighters strongly advise against plugging space heaters into power strips or surge protectors. Although these devices are useful for electronics like chargers, computers, and lamps, they are not designed to handle the high electrical demand of a space heater. The large amount of power required can cause the strip’s internal wiring to overheat, melt, or even start a fire. For this reason, experts recommend connecting space heaters directly into a wall outlet, which is designed to safely support their energy needs.

Placement is another major factor in preventing accidents. Space heaters should always have several feet of open space around them to keep them away from curtains, blankets, clothing, furniture, and other flammable materials. They should also sit on a stable, flat surface where they cannot easily tip over. While many modern heaters include automatic shutoff features for overheating or tipping, these safety systems should be considered a backup—not a replacement for careful use.

Supervision is equally important. Leaving a space heater running while nobody is nearby increases the chance that a problem could go unnoticed. Even a small malfunction can become dangerous if there is no one present to respond quickly. Using a heater while sleeping is especially discouraged because a person may not notice warning signs such as unusual smells, smoke, or excessive heat until the situation becomes serious.

Winter electrical safety extends beyond space heaters as well. High-powered appliances such as electric blankets, heated tools, and other warming devices should be used responsibly and unplugged when they are no longer needed. Damaged cords should be replaced immediately, and extension cords should not become permanent solutions for powering heating appliances.

Space heaters can provide valuable comfort during cold weather, but safe habits are essential. By using a proper wall outlet, keeping the area around the heater clear, avoiding unattended operation, and following basic electrical precautions, homeowners can enjoy warmth while reducing the risk of fires. Most heater-related accidents are preventable, and simple awareness can make the difference between a cozy winter and a dangerous situation.
