The morning after we moved into our new home, we found a handwritten note tucked beneath our windshield wiper that read, “One car per house!” My husband, Jack, and I laughed because both of our vehicles fit perfectly on our own driveway without blocking the sidewalk or the street. A few days later, our neighbor introduced herself as the unofficial spokesperson for the neighborhood and insisted the homeowners association only allowed one vehicle per driveway. She warned us that everyone was expected to follow the rule, but after checking the official HOA documents, we discovered no such restriction existed.

We ignored her demands and continued parking both cars on our property. Three mornings later, we walked outside to find both vehicles already attached to tow trucks while our neighbor watched with a satisfied smile. Before she could celebrate, I noticed the bright orange notice on my windshield and couldn’t help laughing. Looking directly at her, I said, “You just made a very expensive mistake,” and within the next hour, everything began to unravel.
