The next morning, Elena entered the lawyer’s office expecting humiliation, not comfort. Marlene sat beside her brothers with the confidence of someone certain the outcome would be in her favor. The moment Elena walked in, Marlene folded her arms and asked, “So, when do you plan on leaving our father’s house?” Her words hung in the air like a verdict. Instead of reaching for the will, however, the lawyer placed a small wooden box in front of Elena. Inside was a single photograph and a handwritten letter. The photograph had been taken at the charity dinner where Russell first met her. She was standing behind the serving table, laughing at something a coworker had said, completely unaware anyone was watching. On the back, Russell had written, “This is the moment I realized kindness could still surprise me.” It was proof that he had noticed her long before money, marriage, or inheritance had ever entered the story.
