Gavin Newsom Honors Charlie Kirk After Utah Shooting

Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was shot Wednesday afternoon during a campus event at Utah Valley University (UVU). His spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “Charlie Kirk has been shot at Utah Valley University. Condition unknown.”

Video footage captured Kirk speaking under a white pop-up tent when a gunshot rang out. The crowd immediately panicked, with many shouting for others to run. The attack occurred moments after Kirk addressed a question about transgender mass shooters in America.

Messages of support and concern flooded social media from national figures. President Donald Trump urged prayers, calling Kirk “a great guy from top to bottom.” Vice President J.D. Vance also expressed support, while California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the shooting as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible.”

Utah Valley University officials confirmed the shooting happened around 12:20 p.m. They reported the shot was fired from a building approximately 200 yards away, striking during the outdoor event. Security personnel rushed Kirk away from the scene for treatment.

The university was placed on immediate lockdown, with classes suspended for the remainder of the day. Law enforcement confirmed a suspect had been taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Political leaders from both parties released statements condemning the attack. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and former Vice President Kamala Harris all emphasized that violence has no place in American political life.

Calls for unity were echoed nationwide, with leaders stressing the need to protect public discourse and ensure the safety of public figures regardless of political ideology.

As the investigation continues, officials have pledged to provide updates. The shooting has reignited concerns about political violence, raising urgent questions about security at high-profile events across the country.
