House Republican Introduces \u201cMAMDANI Act\u201d to Cut Federal Funds to New York City<\/strong><\/p>\n

A House Republican is seeking to block all federal funding to New York City for the duration of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani\u2019s tenure. The proposal, introduced by Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), is titled the Moving American Money Distant from Anti-National Interests Act<\/em> \u2014 pointedly abbreviated as the \u201cMAMDANI Act.\u201d The two-page bill states that \u201cduring any period in which Zohran Mamdani is mayor of New York, New York,\u201d all unobligated federal funds to the city \u201care hereby rescinded,\u201d and no new funds \u201cmay be obligated or expended.\u201d Fox News Digital reported that Carter plans to introduce the legislation on Friday.<\/p>\n

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, won Tuesday\u2019s New York City mayoral race, defeating independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Though Carter\u2019s bill is unlikely to pass, it reflects a growing Republican effort to use Mamdani as a symbol of what they call the Democratic Party\u2019s far-left turn. GOP strategists say they plan to link vulnerable Democrats nationwide to Mamdani\u2019s \u201cradical\u201d policies. Carter, who is running for the U.S. Senate in Georgia, said taxpayers in his state \u201cshould not be forced to prop up a city that\u2019s choosing socialism.\u201d He added, \u201cIf New Yorkers want communism, let them have it \u2014 but Georgia won\u2019t pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani has faced immediate criticism since his victory. His post-election video thanking supporters and encouraging small-dollar donations to fund his transition team drew backlash online, with critics accusing him of \u201cbegging for money\u201d less than a day after winning. Meanwhile, CNN commentator Van Jones described Mamdani\u2019s victory speech as \u201csharp\u201d and \u201cuncharacteristically aggressive,\u201d contrasting it with the calm demeanor he showed during the campaign.
