While most GOP defeats occurred in <strong>Democratic strongholds<\/strong>, the results still dealt a symbolic blow to the party heading into 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>New York City<\/strong>, socialist candidate <strong>Zohran Mamdani<\/strong> defeated a rare bipartisan coalition led by former Governor <strong>Andrew Cuomo<\/strong>, becoming the city\u2019s first socialist mayor. Meanwhile, <strong>California voters<\/strong> approved <strong>Proposition 50<\/strong>, abolishing the state\u2019s independent redistricting system \u2014 a move expected to give Democrats up to five additional House seats. \u201cIt was not expected to be a victory,\u201d Trump told GOP senators Wednesday morning, calling the night \u201can interesting evening\u201d that offered lessons for Republicans. Elsewhere, Democrats scored decisive wins. In <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, <strong>Mikie Sherrill<\/strong> beat Republican <strong>Jack Ciattarelli<\/strong> 56.2% to 43.2%, and in <strong>Virginia<\/strong>, <strong>Abigail Spanberger<\/strong> defeated <strong>Winsome Earle-Sears<\/strong> 57.5% to 42.3%. Both states went for Biden in the last presidential election by roughly six points.<\/p>\n<p>Following the results, <strong>House Republicans<\/strong> began exploring legal options to <strong>block Mamdani from taking office<\/strong>, invoking the <strong>14th Amendment\u2019s Section 3 \u201cinsurrection clause.\u201d<\/strong> The effort, backed by the <strong>New York Young Republican Club<\/strong>, cites Mamdani\u2019s past statements supporting resistance to ICE and his ties to left-wing groups as evidence of giving \u201caid or comfort\u201d to U.S. enemies. The clause, originally aimed at ex-Confederates, has resurfaced in modern politics following challenges to Trump\u2019s own ballot eligibility.
