On this week\u2019s broadcast of Fox News Channel\u2019s Fox News Sunday<\/em>, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said President Donald Trump was \u201ceager\u201d and \u201cdetermined\u201d to reopen the federal government as soon as possible. Anchor Shannon Bream questioned Johnson about Trump\u2019s recent social media posts urging Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to overcome Democratic opposition. Johnson responded that while many senators in both parties have resisted such a move in the past, Trump\u2019s frustration stems from his inability to end the shutdown despite multiple attempts to negotiate. \u201cHe is a big-hearted president,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cHe wants everybody to get their services \u2014 health care for veterans, SNAP benefits, and all the rest. He\u2019s tried everything he can, and he\u2019s just desperate for the government to open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson emphasized that the president\u2019s fiery rhetoric reflects the broader Republican frustration with Democrats, whom he accused of \u201cdigging in their heels.\u201d He added that Trump\u2019s efforts to compromise have been repeatedly rejected, leaving federal workers and ordinary Americans caught in the crossfire of partisan gridlock. \u201cThis is a reflection of all of our desperation,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cWe\u2019re angry about it. I think we should be.\u201d The Speaker\u2019s comments projected unity with the White House while signaling that patience among Republicans is wearing thin as the shutdown enters another week. Johnson maintained that Democrats must come back to the table rather than \u201cholding the government hostage\u201d for political leverage.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on CBS\u2019s Face the Nation<\/em>, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) expressed optimism that the shutdown could end this week now that Trump has returned from his trip to Asia. Warner declined to specify where Democrats might compromise but urged Trump to \u201cput America first\u201d and resume direct negotiations. \u201cWe knew this wasn\u2019t going to end unless Donald Trump was back in the country,\u201d Warner said. \u201cHe\u2019s got to sit down with us and deal with this. It can be done in an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n
