I unfolded the remaining pages and began reading. Richard wrote that his final weeks had given him more time to think about his life than he’d ever allowed himself before. He’d spent years believing that financial success and independence were the only reliable measures of a person’s character. But illness had forced him to recognize how much ordinary kindness mattered, especially when someone had nothing material to offer in return.

He explained that several relatives had contacted him during his illness, asking questions about his property, savings, and plans for his estate. Although some had expressed genuine concern, he felt that others were more interested in what they might eventually inherit. My visits had been different. I hadn’t asked about money or possessions. I’d simply brought flowers, listened to his stories, and returned when I promised.

Richard admitted that he’d never been particularly good at showing affection. His harshness had created distance between him and the people he loved, and he regretted not recognizing the damage sooner. He thanked me for treating him with patience despite our difficult history. Then he explained that the brass key belonged to a safety deposit box at a bank downtown. He’d arranged for documents inside to be released to me after his death.

I read the letter twice before placing it carefully back inside the envelope. I couldn’t imagine what Richard had hidden in the box. Perhaps it contained family photographs, old letters, or something connected to his childhood. Whatever it was, I felt compelled to follow his instructions. The following morning, I called the bank and arranged an appointment. I brought the key, Richard’s letter, and identification, expecting to collect a few sentimental belongings. I had no idea that the contents would change my future.
