Growing up, I had always been uncomfortable around Uncle Richard. He believed that people should work hard, speak honestly, and never expect favors from anyone. Unfortunately, his honesty often sounded more like criticism. At family gatherings, he questioned everyone’s decisions, complained about unnecessary spending, and rarely offered encouragement. His own children had grown accustomed to his harsh personality, and most relatives visited only when absolutely necessary.

When my mother told me that Richard had been hospitalized with a serious illness, I initially hesitated. We hadn’t spoken properly in months, and I couldn’t imagine what we would discuss. But she reminded me that illness could be frightening, especially for someone who had spent years pushing people away. Eventually, I bought a small bouquet of flowers and drove to the hospital, expecting to stay only a few minutes.

Richard was sitting beside the window when I entered. His face looked pale, and his hands trembled slightly as he adjusted the blanket covering his legs. He seemed surprised to see me. For several moments, neither of us knew what to say. Then he quietly asked about my work and whether my mother was doing well. His voice lacked the sharpness I remembered. I stayed nearly an hour, talking about ordinary things. Before leaving, I promised to visit again. He nodded, and for the first time in my life, I saw genuine gratitude in his eyes.
