Michael thanked us again before preparing to leave. Darren asked about Joshua’s therapy and listened as Michael explained the progress his son had been making. Joshua proudly described exercises he’d learned and said he hoped to become stronger. Darren smiled, but I noticed tears gathering in his eyes. He shook Michael’s hand and wished the family well.

After they drove away, Darren remained standing on the porch, holding Joshua’s drawing. He studied the colorful figures and the carefully written message for several minutes. Then he turned toward me and admitted that he’d never considered what the money might represent to its owner. He’d seen only our overdue bills and the repairs we couldn’t afford.

Darren apologized for the way he’d treated me. He explained that fear had made him think about survival rather than fairness. I told him I understood his desperation because I’d felt it too. We stood together quietly, recognizing that our financial problems remained unresolved. But something important had changed. The money we’d almost kept wasn’t simply a lucky discovery. It represented another family’s sacrifices, their child’s care, and the hope they’d worked so hard to protect.
