The following morning, Darren left for work before sunrise. I stood in the kitchen staring at the wallet, feeling torn between our immediate needs and my conscience. Six thousand dollars could solve several urgent problems, but I couldn’t ignore the possibility that its owner needed the money even more.

I finally placed the wallet inside my handbag and drove to the police station. An officer listened as I explained where Darren had found it. He counted the money, recorded the contents, and assured me that the department would attempt to contact the owner. I signed the necessary paperwork and walked outside feeling relieved.

That relief disappeared when Darren returned home. He asked where I’d put the wallet, and I told him the truth. His face reddened with anger. He accused me of choosing a stranger over our family and insisted that I’d thrown away our only chance to escape our financial problems.

I tried explaining that the money belonged to someone else, but Darren refused to listen. He said I didn’t understand how frightened he was about losing our apartment. His words hurt because I shared those fears every day. For the next several evenings, we barely spoke. We ate dinner quietly, avoided looking at each other, and went to bed carrying the same unresolved argument. I wondered whether doing what I believed was right would permanently damage the relationship I’d spent eleven years building.
