Darren and I had been married for eleven years, and we’d experienced our share of difficult times. But the previous six months had been especially exhausting. Darren’s hours at the warehouse had been reduced, my part time job barely covered groceries, and unexpected car repairs had drained our savings. Every evening, we sat at the kitchen table calculating which bills could wait another week. We loved each other, but constant financial pressure had made even ordinary conversations feel heavy.

That Friday afternoon, Darren returned home carrying a worn brown wallet. He placed it on the table and opened it, revealing several thick bundles of cash. I stared in disbelief as he counted nearly six thousand dollars. There was also a driver’s license and several cards tucked into the compartments. Darren immediately began talking about paying our overdue rent, fixing the car, and finally having enough money to breathe. His excitement was understandable, but the identification reminded me that someone else was probably searching desperately for the missing wallet.

I suggested contacting the owner or taking it to the police. Darren’s expression changed instantly. He argued that we had struggled for years without anyone offering us help. Why should we sacrifice an opportunity that had appeared unexpectedly? I told him that finding money didn’t make it ours. We argued until neither of us wanted to continue. That night, Darren went to bed convinced we’d keep the cash. I remained awake, thinking about the stranger whose name was printed on the license.
