A few weeks later, Mom and I returned to the storage unit. I decided to preserve Dad’s most meaningful tools and donate some of the remaining equipment to a local woodworking school. His old workshop would help another generation learn the skills he had taught me. I also began repairing small pieces of furniture at home. One evening, I used Dad’s hand plane to fix a stubborn kitchen drawer. When it finally opened smoothly, I smiled through my tears. Dereck and I eventually separated. I couldn’t rebuild a marriage without trust, and his apology couldn’t erase the choices he’d made. Mom hugged me when I finished repairing the drawer. “Your father would be proud,” she whispered. I looked at the little wooden shavings on the table and smiled. Dad had taught me that damaged things could sometimes be repaired, but also that knowing when to start again mattered. His tools were safe, his memories would live on, and my next chapter finally belonged to me. THE END.
