The following days were filled with appointments, examinations, and difficult conversations. Emily’s specialists explained the diagnosis and discussed the treatment options with us. Thankfully, they believed the condition could be treated, although recovery would take time. I stayed beside my daughter whenever possible, making sure she understood what was happening and could ask questions. Mark wanted to attend every appointment, but Emily wasn’t ready to be alone with him. I respected her wishes and arranged for conversations to happen with appropriate support. Slowly, she began smiling again. One evening, she asked me whether I was disappointed in her.

I immediately held her face between my hands. “Never, sweetheart. You did nothing wrong. You were sick, and you deserved to be heard.” She started crying and admitted she had sometimes wondered whether she was imagining everything. Those words hurt more than anything else. I promised that we would rebuild her confidence together. Meanwhile, Mark began meeting with a counselor and acknowledged that his decisions had seriously harmed our daughter. I made it clear that apologies alone would not restore trust. He would have to demonstrate change through his actions. Then, one morning, the specialist arrived with the latest results and a reassuring smile.
