Margaret explained that Larry had lost his job after becoming seriously ill. Medical bills eventually consumed his savings, and losing his apartment followed. He rarely discussed his past because he didn’t want people to pity him. But he had never forgotten the people he once helped. He told Margaret that he hoped someone would remember him the same way someday. She handed me another envelope that Larry had left with her before his final hospitalization. My name was written across it. Inside was a photograph of Larry standing outside the courthouse, smiling beside several newly married couples.

On the back, he had written, “I spent years making sure strangers never stood alone. Then Sarah reminded me what it felt like to belong somewhere.” I pressed the photograph against my chest. His deception still hurt, but I finally understood his loneliness. He hadn’t married me simply to solve a funeral problem. He had wanted to experience being chosen, loved, and remembered. Margaret quietly asked whether I wanted to take the photograph home. I nodded, realizing that Larry had given me something far more meaningful than an explanation. He had shown me the person I never fully knew.
