A week later, we held a small gathering in Miles’s memory. Friends, relatives, and neighbors arrived wearing red ribbons, scarves, ties, and dresses. Wes stood beside us, wearing the same bright red dress. This time, nobody whispered or looked away. Russell thanked him publicly for honoring our son and promised that our home would always be a safe place for anyone who needed acceptance. I placed Miles’s letter beside his photograph and finally understood why he had chosen red. It wasn’t a symbol of sadness. It was a symbol of courage.<\/p>\n
That evening, I hugged Wes and told him he would always be part of our family. He smiled through his tears. We couldn’t bring Miles back, but we could honor the person he had been and the love he had left behind. I had once thought that red dress was an insult to my son’s memory. Now, whenever I see that color, I remember a beautiful promise kept by a friend who loved him like a brother. And I remember that the greatest tribute we can give someone is to love them without conditions.<\/p>\n
