The receipt was lying on my mother-in-law\u2019s kitchen counter when I noticed the amount: $2,850. My name is Nora Tillman, and I knew that number because my children, Mason and Ruby, had spent three months earning every dollar of it. All summer, they had worked at their grandmother\u2019s sweet corn stand, waking before sunrise to pick corn and selling it five days a week. They sold 475 dozen, charging six dollars each. Their grandmother, Marjorie, had promised them every penny. Now the receipt from Calloway Feed and Grain showed the money had been used to pay her bill.<\/p>\n
I confronted her that afternoon. She didn’t deny it. \u201cIt was my corn,\u201d she said. \u201cGrown on my property, and my name was on the sign.\u201d I reminded her that the children had done the work, but she insisted the money belonged to her because she had maintained the field. I left without arguing further. There was no written agreement, and I couldn’t imagine dragging my children’s grandmother into court. When I told Mason and Ruby the truth, Ruby put the empty cookie tin back on the windowsill and whispered, \u201cThen I guess it is just a tin.\u201d<\/p>\n
