“I was wrong,” Marjorie whispered. “I was wrong about all of it, Ruby. I’ve wanted to say it since August.”

Ruby studied her grandmother for a moment. “I know,” she replied. “But I will still sell you corn.”

Marjorie stayed nearby, holding the bag against her chest. Chief Dalton offered her a folding chair in the shade, and eventually she began explaining what had happened. The feed bill hadn’t come from her cattle expenses. It had come from money she had borrowed after her older son, Dale, repeatedly asked her for financial help.

Over two years, Dale had borrowed $14,000 from the savings account Marjorie and her late husband had built over decades. He had promised to repay everything by harvest, but the money never came. When the feed bill arrived, Marjorie had nothing left. She had convinced herself that taking the children’s earnings would only be temporary.

She had planned to repay them by Christmas, but Dale never paid her back. Shame kept her from admitting what she had done.

I told her that what happened was still wrong, but she now had an opportunity to teach the children something better. Marjorie pressed the corn bag against her face and began to cry.
