The weeks that followed changed my life in ways I hadn’t expected. I learned the purchasing system, studied delivery schedules, and asked questions whenever something confused me. Sheldon gave me room to make decisions, and although I made mistakes, he never treated them like secret examinations. Mom’s washing machine was replaced, Janelle got her new sneakers, and the atmosphere in our kitchen became noticeably lighter. I also began understanding why Sheldon had chosen me. It wasn’t because I was perfect or had an impressive résumé. It was because I kept showing up, even when life was difficult, and tried to treat people fairly. That mattered more than any qualification written on paper.

Georgia and I remained friends. She sometimes visited the warehouse after school, teasing me about the Buick’s radio and my funeral suit. Sheldon eventually apologized to her for making prom part of his plan. He admitted that after her mother Lauren died, he had become afraid of losing control and had confused protecting people with making decisions for them. Georgia didn’t forgive him overnight, but they gradually began having more honest conversations. I never forgot the night she told me the truth in the parking lot. I had arrived at prom believing I was doing my boss a favor. I left understanding something much more important: being dependable didn’t mean I had to stay small. It meant I could be ready when life finally opened a door.
